PSP acknowledges the fact that these cameras have had a positive impact on the stability of the region. The installation of 41 cameras in the Faro region was phase 1 of the approved system.
These cameras are operated without any hassle. All related parties including City Hall, Public Security Police, and police have agreed to move to the next step of the project. Recently, Faro has been reported in crimes related to technology and computer fraud. The municipality of Faro has given a statement which reads:
[Recently Faro] has focused on crimes of computer fraud and communications or theft of opportunity, cases of extortion, particularly through the Internet, or resistance and coercion against an employee.
Phase 1 Cameras Installed In August
The video surveillance in the city of Faro was installed by the end of the month of August. 32 locations were chosen by the Public Security Police for the installation of CCTV. These locations were chosen due to their history of crimes reported or any complaints received in that particular area. The primary purpose of these cameras was to monitor any suspicious activity within the vicinity. Moreover, these surveillance CCTV cameras have been successful in monitoring crime within the region.
These CCTV cameras are also serving as a means to monitor the traffic violations in the Faro region. The police are actively monitoring these cameras and any citizen who breaks any kind of traffic law is caught and punished for breaking the law.
Out of 41 cameras, 27 were installed in the shopping and prominent areas of Faro. The rest of the 12 cameras were installed on the 6 main roads of the city. These cameras were supervised by the concerned authorities for 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Access to the monitoring system is given to only some of the trained personnel. However, to further make this system foolproof, the image extraction authority was only handed over to some of the criminal investigation agents. The Chamber of Faro believes that the data released by PSP shows an improvement in the overall crime rate within the region. They stated:
[Data from PSP] seem to demonstrate a stabilization in general, violent and serious crime, in relation to 2023.
