The 31st edition of the World Travel Awards took place at the Savoy Palace in Funchal, Madeira, Portugal. Portugal was included in the nominations of several categories. Portugal received 19 awards in the latest edition of the World Travel Awards that took place on 24 November 2024.
Portugal Wins 19 Awards
Portugal has emerged as the winner of the World Travel Awards where the country has bagged 1st prize in 19 categories. The country has made a name for itself as recently it won the “World Golf Awards” as Portugal was voted as the “Best Golf Destination in the World”. Followed by the golf award, Portugal won 19 awards in the World Travel Awards. Last year, Portugal was the recipient of 19 awards in the last edition of the World Travel Worlds back in the year 2023.

This year, Portugal has managed to bag 7 more awards than the previous year. These awards have made Portugal a more attractive destination for tourists. These awards were given to different cities/municipalities within Portugal according to the category of the award. Lisbon won an award for the best destination for urban breaks along with the best city for heritage culture. Algarve was the recipient of the best beach destination in the world.
The Algarve also won this award in the year 2020 and 2021 as well. Porto also received an award for best metropolitan seaside destination for tourists and locals. Azores also won an award for the best destination for adventure tourism. The best island destination in the world was awarded to Madeira for the 10th consecutive time.

Portugal Outperforms In World Travel Awards
Apart from the awards won by the regions of Portugal, the country outperformed in some of the other areas as well. Parks of Sintra-Monte da Lua were considered the best company in the world for conservation. Passadiços do Paiva located in the Aveiro district of Portugal was recognized as the best attraction for tourism adventure. Dark Sky Alqueva was given the best responsible tourism project.
TAP Air Portugal was awarded the best-leading company due to its connections to South America and Africa. Apart from this, some awards were won in the hotel sector which are as follows:
- Olissipo Lapa Palace: Best Classic Hotel
- Amazing Evolution: Won the award for coming out as the lead in the management sector of boutique hotels.
- Bairro Alto Hotel: Best Historical Reference Hotel
- Dunas Bouradas Beach Club: Best Golf Resort and Villas
- Saccharum: Best Retreat in the hotel business
Savoy Palace, located in several municipalities of Portugal, was voted as the best luxury hotel. This hotel is the same place where the gala was hosted. The Reserve Hotel in Portugal received an award for the best luxury boutique hotel in the world. This hotel belongs to the same group as Savoy Palace.
