Vilamoura has made history by opening a new marina for larger boats. The event was held on November 23 and they celebrated the 50th anniversary of Vilamoura Marina. This new facility aims to attract bigger yachts and boost the Algarve’s economy.
Portugal had no marina before this that can accommodate vessels of this size. 68 boats ranging in length from 20 to 40 meters may be accommodated in the marina. Vilamoura is now a major stop for big boats sailing between northern Europe and Mediterranean due to the latest development.

New Marina In Vilamoura
The CEO of Arrow Global Portugal João Bugalho spoke about the marina’s importance during the inauguration. Arrow Global Portugal is the company that owns Vilamoura World.
Bugalho said:
This marina was something the country needed. Boats from northern Europe used to pass by the Algarve without stopping. Now, they can dock here and when they do, they fall in love with the place.
The marina is expected to put Vilamoura on the map for high end nautical tourism. With modern facilities and the Algarve’s coastline, the region is now better equipped to attract luxury yacht owners.
Budget For The Project
The budget for this project was about 23 million euros. It was funded entirely without help from the European Union.
Building a marina in such a short time was no small task. The construction started on January 23 and took just 10 months to complete. However, the project stayed on schedule.
The director of Vilamoura Marina Isolete Correia said the completion of the project was a proud moment for her. Correia admitted that the tight schedule was challenging.
She added:
I am very happy because I saw the Vilamoura Marina being born, and now I am witnessing the birth of the second marina. It’s a very special day for me, and I believe also for the municipality of Loulé, for the Algarve, and even for the country
Need For Marina In Portugal
The new marina meets a growing demand for berths for larger yachts. Portugal can not cater to boats of this size before.
She said:
There is no marina in Portugal capable of accommodating vessels between 20 and 40 meters. The demand exists, and now we have a new marina equipped with everything the current market needs. We are already contacting those on the waiting list and will soon start marketing the occupancy of the spaces
Large yachts are often owned by wealthy individuals who spend generously during their visits.
Vilamoura and the rest of the Algarve have both been stronger since the port opened. Algarve has been a holiday spot for a long time. People from all over the world visit to enjoy the weather and beautiful beaches.
Now, the region has even more to offer. The Algarve is set to compete with other luxury destinations like Mallorca and Monaco with this state of the art marina.
Correia said:
This marina puts Vilamoura on the map for luxury yacht owners. It’s a big opportunity for the Algarve to shine on the world stage. Vilamoura is now part of an itinerary that sailors of large boats didn’t consider before. This is a turning point for us
The marina’s opening was celebrated with excitement and pride. It represents growth and ambition for Vilamoura and the Algarve.
Larger boats will bring more tourists to the area because of the port. This will make Vilamoura’s status as a top spot for boating tourists even stronger.
Correia believes the project is more than just a marina. She said:
It’s a new chapter for Vilamoura, the Algarve, and Portugal
A big deal is that Vilamoura’s new harbor is now open. It is something Portugal did not have before and it helps the local economy. It also makes the Algarve known as a place where large ships like to go.
