Christmas Lights Will Be Installed In Streets And Avenues Of Funchal, Madeira

Christmas lights will be installed in the streets and avenues of Funchal, Madeira. These lights will be lit from 1st December 2024 to 8th January 2025. The lights will mark the beginning of the Christmas season in Madeira, Portugal.

Madeira Christmas Lights To Be Lit From 1 December

The municipality of Madeira will be lit for Christmas beginning on 1 December. These lights will light for the remaining days of the year 2024. The regional secretariat of Madeira has informed that the lighting will cover all the main areas of Funchal which include gardens, squares, fortresses, palaces, monuments, and public buildings.

All the Christmas lights will turn on from 6 pm and will turn off at 1 am. These timings will be followed on most of the days. There are some exceptions where the Christmas lights will follow the timing as mentioned below:

  • 23 December: 6 pm to 6 am
  • 24 December: 6 pm to 6 am
  • 25 December: 6 pm to 4 am
  • 30 December: 6 pm to 4 am
  • 31 December: 6 pm to 6 am

Funchal, Madeira will also host a beautiful installation named “Caminho Celestial das Tempestades” that will be set up at Cais do Funchal. The management of Madeira has stated about the lighting information as follows:

Visitors will be able to hear, see, and interact with the help of their cell phones and direct interactions. Along this path, there will be ‘clouds’ that change color, curtains of lights that imitate rainfall, ‘stars’ that shine, and even ‘lightning’. At the end of the path, there will be a grand ‘sun’.

Funchal Lights Will Light Up The City

Technology will be the main reason for various displays of lights within the city. The Secretariat for Tourism has informed the presence of both humans and technology for the display of Christmas lights. As for technology, movement sensors and controlling different colors of light will be used at various places in the city.

In the center of Funchal, the lighting is inspired by the Cleópatra-da-Madeira butterfly. It is a species that is found in the nearby city which is considered luminous and fluorescent. These inspirational lighting will be available in Rua Fernão de Ornelas and the nearby areas of the Municipal Garden. The Secretariat of Tourism stated:

The entire project was created with original pieces, following the highest criteria of aesthetics and creativity, quality and diversity of motifs, whilst maintaining the traditional, religious, and regional character of Madeiran Christmas celebrations.

3D Light Christmas Installation

A big Christmas tree is planned to be installed in Praça do Povo as part of the Christmas celebrations. This tree will be 30 meters long and will feature items related to Christmas on it. It is expected that Praça Colombo will also have a 3D installation in the city. This 3D illumination will create a Christmas tree and Christmas ball. Avenida Sá Carneiro and Praça CR7 will also display some Christmas elements that will be based on the theme of the sea.

Avenida Sá Carneiro will have an installation with jellyfish whose light shines to illuminate the city. This installation will be formed with a ceiling of 180 meters. Praça CR7 will install two walls that will be filled with jellyfish. The Regional Government had issued two public tenders which were worth 3.6 million Euros (without tax) for the design, assembly, construction, and dismantling of the Christmas and New Year lighting for two years: 2024/2025 and 2025/2026. Tourism Secretariat stated:

The technology and equipment used will be environmentally friendly, low consumption, and recyclable, such as the exclusive use of LED (light transmitting diode), respecting the highest standards of energy efficiency and environmental sustainability.
