Portugal ranks at 71st for the most polluting country in the world. Portugal has received this ranking out of 250 countries in the world. Lisbon Airport is the biggest pollution-contributing factor in Portugal.
Climate Trace Organization Released Rankings
Organization for Greenhouse Gas (CHG) known as ‘Climate Trace’ has released the latest global analysis for every country. The analysis is based on the emission of greenhouse gas that affects the climate. China is ranked as the most polluting country as the greenhouse gas emissions exceed the limit. While Pitcairn Islands is ranked as the least polluting country in the world.

The Climate Trace organization was formed by the Vice President of the United States Al Gore. These rankings were released in Baku, the city of Azerbaijan during the UN climate conference summit. Portugal was at the 72nd ranking last year which has now been at 71st country for most pollution. They have been fluctuating between 71 and 72 for the last decade.
Portugal produces 86 tons of pollution that contributes to greenhouse gas emissions according to the data from Climate Trace. This places Portugal in a better position than Sweden and Greece. However, some other countries like Denmark, Switzerland, and Hungary are better placed than Portugal.
Emissions By Districts Of Portugal
According to the statistics for districts in Portugal, most Greenhouse Gas emissions are produced by Lisbon and Porto this year. Lisbon contributes 12 million tons of greenhouse gases while Porto contributes 9 million tons. Most of the districts have a production of 2 to 7 million tons of greenhouse gases such as Beja. Although, due to the Sines refinery, Setúbal produces a greenhouse gas emission of 9.7 million tons of carbon dioxide (CO2).
The major emission zones in Portugal lie near the sea. Only two of these zones are exceptions such as the Galp refinery located in Sines and the Humberto Delgado airport located in Lisbon. The data states that Portela airport has emitted 3.35 million tons of CO2 during the last year. This year, the number has gone higher as it emitted 3.48 million tons of CO2. It is very concerning for the country as the number gets higher every year.
Humberto Delgado airport in Lisbon emits lots of CO2 every year. This has affected the ranking of Portugal as the most polluting country. The emissions continue to rise as suggested by the following data:
- 1.45 million tons in 2021
- 1.86 million tons in 2022
- 3.35 million tons in 2023
- 3.48 million tons in 2024
In 2023, with 3.35 million tons of CO2 emissions, Lisbon airport officially surpassed the Galp refinery as the refinery has observed a decline in the last two years. The emission from the Galp refinery is as follows:
- 2.25 million tons in 2021
- 2.40 million tons in 2022
- 2.19 million tons in 2023
- 2.19 million tons in 2024
Port Of Sines Emit 1.19 Million Tons Of CO2
The third most polluting area in Portugal is the Port of Sines. The port sector emits a large number of CO2. It has emitted 1.19 million tons of CO2 during this year and the number has increased since 2021. The fourth place for the most emission of CO2 is Carnes Landeiro, located in Barcelos. It contributes to 964,000 tons of pollution. After that, Ribatejo Thermoelectric Power Plant is next in line which contributes to 947,000 tons of pollution. This power plant is located in Carregado. Next in line at 6th place comes the Cimpor’s cement factory located in Souselas, Coimbra. It contributes to 893,000 tons of CO2 this year.
Data from Climate Trace shows that cities within the United States and Asia are the most contributors to Greenhouse gas emissions. The organization used satellites and ground observations to calculate the heat-trapping carbon dioxide. It has also calculated methane and nitrous oxide as well as some of the other pollutants in the environment.
Total carbon dioxide and methane production on Earth has increased. The Carbon dioxide has increased by 0.7% (61.2 billion metric tons) while methane emissions have increased by 0.2%. The Co-founder of Climate Trace, Gavin McCormick stated:
The numbers are higher than other datasets because we have comprehensive coverage and see more emissions across more sectors.
Greenhouse Gas Emissions Exceed 61 Billion Tons
The Greenhouse Gas emissions have exceeded a lot as the world produces 61.2 billion tons of emissions every year. China is ranked 1st for the most polluting country in the world with 17 billion tons of emissions. The second place is taken by the United States of America with 6 billion tons while the third place goes to India with 4 billion C02 emissions.
