A Man Dies On Algarve Motorway
This incident on the motorway has caused a bit of havoc in the municipality of Algarve. The National Emergency Institute of Portugal (INEM) will open an investigation into the matter of this incident. This incident involves the death of a 60-year-old man who was helpless at the service station located on Via do Infante in Algarve. It has been reported by SIC Notícias that the man died when the car was still in the car park at the Olhão service area. The man got out of his car and laid on the surface before passing out at the scene. His family members got very scared at the moment, and they called 112 immediately. The staff of the fuel station was also present with the person to support him. It is reported that the call from the family was registered at 11:03 am. This was their first call that was dispatched to the medical services of Portugal.
The calls from the family were received by the PSP police. Unfortunately, the call was answered by the automatic system which is pre-recorded to answer the calls. This is why the family could not explain the scenario to the PSP police and inform them about the urgency of the matter. The family was concerned at this point, and they tried several times, but their efforts were not successful. The SIC has also recognized the intensity of this situation where a man died at the Motorway service station.
INEM Medical Services Needs To Be Improved
The INEM has stated that it did not receive the request for the help of the 60-year-old man until 11:30 am. Considering this, the aid from the medical services did not arrive at the service station soon enough. It is noted that emergency services arrived on the scene at 12:08 am which is more than an hour after the family first called the services. There were 112 calls from the family of the man and the staff of the service station. An emergency vehicle arrived after midnight at the scene. An ambulance from the Olhão fire station also arrived at the scene.
Ambulance staff carried the man in the vehicle, and they took him to the Faro Hospital. Services like advanced life support were provided on the way to the hospital. INEM has also stated:
[INEM] didn’t receive the request for assistance until 11.30 am.
The situation of the exact time of death is still unclear. The old man was taken to the Faro hospital and sometime later, he was declared dead by the hospital staff. A report from the SIC only states that the 60-year-old man has died after being brought to hospital. The newspaper, Correio da Manhã has briefed the people that a call came from the Spain-Faro side of the motorway A22. This is why the newspaper suggests that the man may have arrived from Spain to Portugal only a few moments ago. However, INEM has accepted the responsibility of their negligence which has cost the life of a man. It is stated:
INEM admits that there was a delay in assisting and has already ordered the opening of an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the assistance.
