Fertagus Trains Will Run Every 20 Minutes Between Setúbal And Lisbon

The Portuguese Ministry of Infrastructure and Housing recently shared some important news. Trains between Setúbal and Lisbon will run every 20 minutes. This is going to implement from December 15. This improvement is part of a new contract with Fertagus which is the company that operates these trains. Fertagus’s contract has been extended for six and a half years until March 2031.

This change will have a big impact on people who live in Setúbal and nearby areas. Many rely on this train service to commute to work, school or for personal travel. The government hopes to make travel easier and more comfortable with more frequent trains.

Trains Services Improved Between Setúbal And Lisbon

With this new plan, weekday train services will increase by 73% and weekend services by 172%. The changes cover a total of 14 stations between Setúbal and Lisbon. The stations that will benefit from this expansion are Penalva, Pinhal Novo, Venda do Alcaide, Palmela, and Setúbal.

Ministry said in the statement:

This reinforcement of train circulation between Lisbon and Setúbal, in a total of 14 stations represents a significant improvement in the quality of life for the populations of the municipalities of the Setúbal Peninsula with reduced waiting times and less crowded trains

The Ministry’s goal is to improve daily life for people in the Setúbal Peninsula. Crowded trains and long waiting times are common complaints among commuters. The government wants to make the daily commute faster by adding more trains and more comfortable for everyone.

Many people in Setúbal and nearby towns work or study in Lisbon. For them, this train route is an essential part of daily life. A frequent and reliable train schedule allows people to arrive on time which also reduces waiting and helps avoid the stress of delays.

The Minister of Infrastructure and Housing Miguel Pinto Luz said that these changes aim to improve the quality of life. By adding more trains, the government hopes to make daily routines easier and more efficient.

He said:

The extension of the Fertagus concession contract for six years and six months translates into measures with a very positive impact for the populations that cross the Tagus in train. Trains every 20 minutes to Setúbal, every day, represent a saving of time for the population which, at the end of the day, results in a better quality of life

These changes also support Lisbon’s economy. Easier travel between Setúbal and Lisbon may bring more people to Lisbon for work, shopping, and leisure. A convenient train route can boost local business and tourism in the capital.

Peak And Off-Peak Schedules For Coina

The updates bring even better news for those commuting to Coina. During peak hours, trains to Coina will keep running every 10 minutes. Trains will come every 20 minutes outside of peak hour.

Weekend and holiday travelers will benefit too. This change will make it easier for people to plan trips to Lisbon or Setúbal over weekends.

These train improvements offer more than just a convenient schedule. Over time, better service will lead to growth for Setúbal and nearby areas. There are environmental benefits as well.

The government hopes that fewer people will choose to drive by offering more train options. This change will reduce traffic and pollution which helps Portugal meet its environmental goals.
