A new Bypass EN125 is being constructed on Algarve National Road in Olhão. Portugal’s Government has finally given the green light for this decision to construct the bypass. This will divert a lot of traffic away from the city of Olhão.
New Bypass EN125 To Be Constructed
The Government has signed the contract for the construction of the bypass on Monday, 30 September 2024. This contract was signed at the headquarters of the Infaestructuras de Portugal (IP). This ceremony was attended by many political figures like the chairman of IP, Miguel Cruz, Mayor of Olhão, António Pina, and many more. The representative from the construction company of Gabriel A.S. Courto, Tiago Couto also attended the ceremony.

This investment was used from the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR) of Portugal. A whopping 14.4 million Euros was invested by the Government for this project. This decision to make a Bypass was made by the Government due to traffic issues in the city. This Bypass will end the bottleneck of the surrounding area. EN125 also passes through the center of the town so it will not disturb the traffic of the area. Mayor of Olhão, António Pina stated:
The last administrative step has been taken to start (the construction) of the much-desired Olhão bypass.
Infraestruturas de Portugal (IP) has explained that the construction of EN125 Bypass will make less traffic accidents. This will also aid the pedestrian to cross the road easily. The safety and the traffic in the area will be much improved after the construction of the Bypass.
6 Kilometers Bypass In Olhão
EN125 Bypass is 6 kilometers long and it will have 3.5-meter lanes in both directions. The Bypass will also have 1-meter shoulders to cater for any emergency stops by the ongoing passengers. It is constructed in a way that it will feature 6 new roundabouts. These roundabouts will connect the traffic of the bypass with the local roads of the area. This project also includes some other features like:
- It includes two underpasses
- Many electronic traffic signs to relay traffic information
- Several Multiple video surveillance cameras for monitoring the traffic
The EN125 Bypass will start from the west of Olhão and the route will finish at an already built roundabout. This roundabout is in the eastern direction which connects the EN125 with the EN398. Infraestruturas de Portugal has explained that a circular way will also be built near several communities including:
- João de Ourém
- Torrejão, Bela Mandil
- Arrochela, Quinta do Calhau
- Piares
- Ponte de Quelfes
- Quinta do Major
The Mayor of Olhão, António believes that this project will benefit the community a lot. The traffic situation in the surrounding area will be much better. This will give relief to the daily commuters who travel to work every day. He said that getting this EN125 Bypass construction was no easy task. This was completed due to some good friends of the Mayor in both Algarve and Olhão. He stated:
[Construction of EN125 is a] Victory which required a lot of work. [It was possible due to] several good friends in the Algarve and Olhão.
