Portugal Will Contribute 300,000 Dollars Every Year For Fighting Against Hunger And Poverty

Portugal has announced to donate 300,000 dollars every year to fight against poverty and hunger. A global alliance has been formed where several countries will unite together. The Brazilian President started this alliance during the G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro.

Alliance To Fight Against Poverty And Hunger

An alliance between several countries has been formed which will be working to resolve issues like poverty and hunger. The first meeting was called in Brazil where heads of the states attended. Portugal will be attending this summit for the first time ever as it was invited by the Brazilian President. Portuguese Prime Minister, Luís Montenegro praised the efforts of Brazilian President Lula da Silva. Montenegro believes that discussions on topics like poverty and hunger are important for every nation. He also stated:

Our commitment is firm, as will be our investment. Portugal will contribute around 10% of the operating cost of the Alliance Support mechanism, 300,000 dollars (around 284 thousand euros), at least until 2030.

There is no signal transmission allowed within the summit. That is why Montenegro informed the press about his views after the summit. He has ensured the press that he believes in solving poverty as he deems it quite vital. He stated:

The historic decision to create a Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty will create a new political dynamic and should mobilize all of us to achieve sustainable development goals 1 and 2 [of the United Nations] by 2030. It is, therefore, with special satisfaction that we see children and young people at the center of the concerns reflected in the Alliance’s founding document.

All Alliance Countries Will Contribute

Portugal is one of the founding members of the alliance formed to fight against poverty and hunger. The Portuguese Prime Minister believes that the combined efforts from all the countries will help to resolve this issue. All the members of the alliance will provide resources to fight against this issue. The main aim of the alliance is to promote synergies with other organizations like the United Nations and the European Union.

The current investments made by Portugal will be in sectors of social services, geography, security, food, and nutritional services. More than 50% of the resources of Portugal are now being utilized for these sectors. It also aims to promote these services in the less advanced countries in the world. Their main focus is on Africa as it suffers from financial crises along with some other issues. His next aim is Africa, Latin America, and some other countries. Montenegro stated:

And it always does so in a spirit of partnership, ensuring ownership by partner and beneficiary countries. We believe that the effectiveness of the programs is as relevant as their volume.

Portugal Attended 100 G20 Meetings

Montenegro wants to increase his efforts to deal with poverty and hunger. This can be demonstrated by the participation of Portugal in more than 100 G20 meetings. The European country also participated at the ministerial and technical level through the invitations of Brazil. The recent meeting conducted in Rio de Janeiro included heads of state of many countries. G20 members represent the largest economy, which also contributes 85% of the world’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). These 20 countries also possess more than 75% of the world’s trade along with two-thirds of the world’s population. All the G20 member states are as follows:

Brazil was made the president of the G20 summit during the period of 1 December 2023 and 30 November 2024. The main theme for the Brazilian summit was “Building a Fair World and a Sustainable Planet”. Brazil invited 19 other countries for the summit including Portugal, Spain, Angola, and Mozambique. The Brazilian President also invited the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP) to attend the summit regarding poverty and hunger.
