One In Four Schools Have Banned Using Smartphones During Schools Reported By A National Survey

A national survey has stated that one in four schools in Portugal has banned phone usage during school hours. The survey informs that children tend to use phones more than ever. That is why schools have devised this strategy to ban phones in schools.

Phones Banned In Some Schools

Some schools in Portugal have decided to ban the usage of phones during school hours. Many children are making it a habit to use phones more commonly. Children up to the 6th grade tend to be addicted to their phones. This has forced some schools to decide to ban phones in schools. Any student who is seen with phones during school hours will be liable to the disciplinary committee. His phone might also be confiscated by the school authorities.

This survey was conducted in many schools in the last week of September. 128 school boards responded to the survey stating that they are facing issues related to children using more phones than usual. They also spoke about the measures that were announced by the Ministry of Education, Science and Innovation. The survey also asked schools how they are dealing with the issue of children who are using phones more frequently. Around 35 schools who participated in this survey answered that they have made some rules that restrict or ban the use of phones during school hours.

This stat counts for around 27% of the total schools that participated in the survey. 27% of the schools have decided to restrict the use of phones for the new school year. Every school is dealing with this issue differently. The option does vary from regarding the school cycle. Children tend to use phones more often in the first and the second cycle of school. The survey stated:

[Usage of phone among children] being more common between the 1st and 2nd cycles.

Council Of Ministers Suggest Banning Phones In First Two Periods

These responses to the survey suggest that the principals of the schools will be following the recommendations of less usage of phones for children. This decision will be enforced at the beginning of the school year. Every child will be advised not to bring their phones to school. The purpose of school is education, and children should focus on their studies while being at school. The study of the survey concludes:

In 24 of the schools, the information is that procedures have not yet been adopted, but in some cases, the issue is under consideration.

It is stated that in other 35 schools, the use of phone entirely restricted. The Government of Portugal has also decided to approve a recommendation to ban the use of phones. This recommendation suggested banning phone usage during the first and the second periods of school.  which was suggested by the Council of Ministers. It was suggested by the Council of Ministers to ban the use of phones for only the first two periods.

Right now, only 2% of the schools in Portugal have decided to ban the usage of smartphones in schools. This survey was carried out by the National Education Federation (FNE) and the Association for Training and Research in Education and Work (AFIET). It was a survey that was carried out at a national level. 128 schools responded to this survey and answered the questions. The common statement that was recorded in the survey is as follows:
