A new rail pass in Portugal will cover all lines in Lisbon and Porto city. This pass will cost 20 Euros for a month and can be availed from any railway station. It includes all the regional, 2nd class intercity services and some of the urban lines of the city as well.
New Rail Pass Cost 20 Euros
The official Gazette of the Union has published a new decree-law that will introduce new rail passes in Portugal. This news was published in the gazette which is also responsible for the green railway pass. The new pass will replace the national railway pass for the public. This pass will mark a new beginning as citizens can travel to other places with much ease.

The cost of these new rail passes is only 20 Euros for a month. This system of new rail passes will ensure smooth operation for the public who travel frequently. The new passes will come into effect from 21 October. Citizens can buy these passes from the railway stations as well. This pass does not accommodate the services provided by Alfa Pendular, Internacional Celta along with a first class in intercity and interregional trains. It also includes the urban trains that run in the metropolitan areas within the cities of Lisbon and Porto.
New Decree-Law For Rail Passes
A new transport ticketing system has been introduced in Portugal. This can be applied for a value of 20 Euros per month. The decree states about any discounts and the validity of these passes:
[20 Euros] is not subject to accumulation of discounts. [Validity of passes is] 30 consecutive days from the date of its acquisition.
These transport tickets will be uploaded on the CP card and can be available for 30 consecutive days. The maximum amount for this contract for new tickets is 5 million Euros for this year. This amount will be fixed at 19 million Euros in the year 2025. The decree also states that it will be financed under:
By compensation under the public service contract signed between the State and CP – Comboios de Portugal.
National Rail Pass To Be Revoked After 31 October
The national rail pass which was made by the socialist Executive of António Costa will be in effect till 31 October. A new green rail pass will be available for both regional and inter-regional services. If people want to travel on urban trains in the cities of Lisbon, Coimbra, and Porto, they have to book their seats 24 hours before the start of the train.
There is a rule of reserving only one seat which can be reserved for one trip only. A single person can book a maximum of 2 different trips for one day. This Green rail pass will be valid on the lines that are not covered by the metropolitan intermodal passes. Like Navegante and Andante which are valued at 40 Euros each.
The new rail transport tickets will only cover Carregado to Azambuja line which is located in Lisbon city. There are some more areas which are covered by this new rail transport. All the lines covered by the new rail transport ticket is as follows:
- Carregado to Azambuja line (Lisbon)
- Paredes to Marco de Canaveses (Porto)
- Lousado to Braga line (Porto)
- Vila das Aves to Guimarães line (Porto)
- Aveiro to Paramos (Porto)
