President Predicts 2% Economic Growth For Portugal In 2024

The President of the Republic described Portugal as a country that stands out in the world context for being well, politically stable, with balanced accounts. In this speech at Quito, Ecuador on Saturday he predicted the the country will grow by 2%.

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa addressed a hundred Portuguese nationals and descendants at a hotel in Quito, the final stop of his visit to Ecuador, after attending the 29th Ibero-American Summit in Cuenca on Thursday and Friday.

He said:

“I want to tell you that Portugal is doing well, in a world that is not doing well, in a Europe with complications, in a Latin America with complications. Portugal is politically stable, Portugal has its state accounts in order, Portugal is growing this year, and will grow 2%.”

He concluded his speech by addressing Portuguese emigrants and their descendants saying:

“Portugal is continuing to grow in tourism, it has just broken the record for tourism revenue. Portugal continues to grow in investment. But we want more, we want more. And with you we will go further.”

Macroeconomic Outlook At Budget 2025

The 2025 Budget proposal from the PSD/CDS-PP Government predicts:

  • GDP Growth: 1.8% in 2024 and 2.1% in 2025.
  • Inflation: 2.6% in 2024 and 2.3% in 2025.
  • Budget Surpluses: 0.4% in 2024 and 0.3% in 2025.
  • Public Debt: Debt-to-GDP ratio reduced to 95.9% in 2024 and 93.3% in 2025.

President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa praised the resilience of the Portuguese community in Ecuador during a meeting with about a hundred Portuguese nationals and descendants in Quito this Saturday.

He acknowledged the resilience of the community in a country facing an energy crisis and significant violence issues.

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa said:

“This community of 700 [Portuguese] is worth the entire Spanish community and even more. Do you understand your merit? This is Portugal, this is Portugal all over the world.”

This meeting, held in the lounge of a hotel in Quito, was the final event on the Head of State’s schedule in Ecuador. It took place before his return to Portugal, following his participation in the 29th Ibero-American Summit in Cuenca, held between Thursday and Friday.

In his speech, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa shared that during the Cuenca summit, he discussed the Portuguese community in Ecuador with President Daniel Noboa.

He noted that Noboa is aware of the community’s presence, mentioning that it is not primarily concentrated in Quito and that some members have a long-standing tradition, particularly in fishing.

Addressing the daily power outages in Ecuador, which are a result of a prolonged drought amid the ongoing energy crisis.

The President of the Republic said that:

“It is not easy to endure such challenges. He praised the “resilience of the Portuguese people” and expressed optimism, stating, this will pass from December onwards.”

The Head of State mentioned that there are 700 Portuguese nationals registered in Ecuador and expressed gratitude to the approximately 100 people present for attending the meeting at a hotel in Quito on a Saturday morning.

He acknowledged that they had traveled from all over the country, some by car, others by plane, just to be with their President. And I am with my compatriots, of whom I am so proud.
