Christmas Lights In Lisbon Will Be Lit From 23 November To 6 January

Lisbon will be celebrating Christmas by lighting up the city. The Christmas lights will be lit in Lisbon city on 23 November, and it will remain lit till 6 January. The Portuguese capital will install 1,987,125 low-consumption light bulbs within various locations in the city.

The Christmas festival will begin on Saturday, 23 November, and will be inaugurated at Terreiro do Paco. A huge Christmas tree will be lit at 6:30 pm on Saturday which will officially mark the beginning of the festival. This tradition was followed in previous years as well. A light and sound show will follow the lighting of the Christmas tree.  This event will hold a concert by Singer Áurea. The singer will be performing music with themes from Christmas films.

During the last year 2023, the Christmas lights in Lisbon were lit on 30 November but for this year, the lights will be lit a week before. Lisbon City Council (CML) has stated that the investment for this year’s Christmas lighting is 749,500 Euros. This is the same amount that was utilized for the last year in 2023. The amount lies within the scope of a protocol between the municipality and the Union of Commerce and Services Associations (UACS). The city hall has stated:

It is worth highlighting the measures that were adopted to reduce consumption and energy efficiency: Lisbon will be lit with 1,987,125 low-consumption lamps, using LED technology, which will allow energy savings of around 80% compared to traditional incandescent lamps”, indicated the city hall.

Christmas Lights Expected In 45 Locations

According to the Union of Commerce and Services Associations (UACS) protocol, the same urban area as the previous year will be decorated with lights. Citizens expect the Christmas lights at 45 different locations. This includes the squares, streets, and avenues within the city. The City Hall has informed the public that 1,000 lighting structures will be installed. These structures are made from around 5,700 pieces of decoration.

The energy savings will be kept in check during these Christmas lightings. The Lisbon City Council (CML) has planned to make the lighting more sustainable. The city council laid their views on the usage of sustainable materials:

More sustainable materials will be used, such as biodegradable and recyclable plastics, thus minimizing waste generation.

The municipality of Lisbon also believes in the importance of sustainable lighting. It is vital to use recyclable materials and reduce the environmental impact. The municipality also aims to fully ensure the environmental impact caused by these lights. The municipality stated:

The facilities will be recycled at the end of their useful life, contributing to a circular economy and reducing the environmental impact associated with production and disposal.

Christmas Lighting Timings

The timings for the Christmas lights will be from 5:30 pm to midnight on Sundays. The rest of the days will have 1 or 2 hours more duration of lighting. The timings for the Christmas lighting are as follows:

The time of the Christmas lighting will be from 5:30 pm to 2 am on Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve. Municipality of Lisbon will ensure that the Christmas lights will be lit on time to fascinate the crowd.
