An oil tanker that has been stranded on the coast of Portugal has caused concern among citizens. The Mayor of Viana do Castelo has assured me there is nothing to worry about. The Portuguese coast is safe from the oil tanker.
Stranded Oil Tanker Causes Layer Of Concern
An oil tanker containing 150,000 liters of diesel is stranded near the coast of Portugal. It is reported that the tanker has been broken down around 36.6 kilometers from the coast. This has been seen as an alarming situation by the local authorities. There is a risk of oil leakage which will pollute the sea and might poison the waters.

The mayor of Viana do Castelo has informed the public about the whole scenario. He said that there is nothing to be worried about as the local authorities are looking into this matter. There is no risk of spillage according to the mayor. He stated:
The National Maritime Authority (AMN) has given us every assurance that there are no risks. We have to trust the authorities that have direct responsibility. The municipality is attentive and will be a partner in any eventuality or request that may arise.
Portuguese Navy Involved To Rescue Tanker
The Maritime Authority along with the Navy reported this breakdown a week ago. The shop that was carrying the flag of the Marshall Islands (Oceania) suffered an engine problem which caused them to remain stranded at the sea. Since there is no propulsion, the ship cannot move in any direction. The oil tanker is more than 36.6 kilometers or 24 nautical miles away from the coast of Viana do Castelo.
Portuguese Navy has sent some repair teams to the oil tanker. The authorities hope that the tanker will be functional soon. The repair teams started working on the ship on Thursday. This team includes many skilled technicians who are working non-stop during the clock. It is expected that the work will continue this week so the ship can be on its way to Le Havre in France. The ship was scheduled to be on its way toward France, but this engine failure caused a delay.
Navy has sent an NRP António Enes, a small ship for the rescue operation of the oil tanker. The worst situation is that the oil tanker is drifting day by day due to no engine power. It is difficult to locate the tanker with the passing day. That is why the Navy has sent a rescue ship for assistance. All 28 crew members will remain off the coast until the ship is completely repaired. The Navy has published a statement:
When it arrived on the scene, it acted immediately, carrying out the necessary actions to support the tanker, namely contacting the ship, monitoring navigation in the area, and preserving the safety of all ships in the vicinity.
Technicians Deployed For Repairing Ship
The Socialist mayor has informed us that the task of repairing the ship is extremely difficult due to the location of the ship. It is much more difficult to work with the ship being stranded in the middle of the sea. There are no instruments to work with and the sea is quite rough. Some specialized teams are currently working dedicatedly while ensuring the safety of the workers. Safety is the most important aspect while the repair work goes on. Lisbon Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Center (MRCC Lisboa) got this information a week later. They acted on the news immediately. They stated:
A proactive coordinated response by the Navy with the National Maritime Authority to monitor the situation of the Nissos Rhenia, flying the Marshall Islands flag, which is carrying more than 150,000 liters of diesel, is more than 330 meters long and has a beam of 60 meters.
