Portugal has a long coast where people are excited to surf on the gigantic waves. It is estimated that Portugal has generated a revenue of more than 23 million Euros from the surfing events. This revenue was generated from the World Surfing League and the Big Wave event hosted by the country.
Surfing Event Generates Huge Revenue
Surfing is an exciting sport where people travel all over the world to catch big waves. Portugal has a long history of organizing surfing events due to its enormous coast. The World Surfing League (WSL) in Peniche which was a huge success. The big wave event was also organized by Portugal which took place in Nazaré. The European country was able to obtain 23 million Euros from both these events that were hosted in 2024.

A master’s student at the Lisbon School of Economics and Management has done his research on surfing in Portugal. He stated that Portugal has been benefiting from these surfing events conducted in the country.
Two big events were held in the country to promote the sport of surfing. The World Surfing Elite was conducted on the Supertubos beach from 6 March to 16 March this year. The master’s student has informed that according to his research, this event generated more than 20 million Euros. Another major event hosted by Portugal was the Big Wave Championship, which was held on Praia do Norte, held on 22 January. This event is estimated to generate revenue of more than 3 million Euros.
Revenue From Accommodation and Food
Most of the revenue is generated from the accommodation and the food expenses of the competitors. These competitors are often accompanied by their family and friends who also stay in hotels. This is the reason behind generating huge revenue from accommodation. Visitors who stayed in Peniche have spent 13.3 million Euros in a single day. Those visitors who stayed in Nazaré during the event spent a whopping 1.7 million euros per day. The breakdown of the 1.3 million Euros for Peniche is as follows:
- 4.5 million Euros: Spent on accommodation of friends, families, and guests
- 2.5 million Euros: Consumed on transportation of participants and guests
- 2.8 million Euros: Spent on food expenses
- 3.5 million Euros: Other activities for fun
Nazaré also generated revenue of 1.7 million Euros in a single day. The breakdown of the revenue is as follows:
- 567,000 Euros: Spent on accommodation of friends, families, and guests
- 671,000 Euros: Consumed on transportation of participants and guests
- 592,000 Euros: Spent on food expenses
- 601,000 Euros: Other activities for fun
Huge Profit From Surfing Events
The cost of organizing the races in surfing events was not much. The race in Peniche cost 3.5 million Euros and the race in Nazaré cost 800,000 Euros. This amount does not include the cost which was spent by the sponsors of the surfing events.
It is also exclusive to the amount which resulted due to the media coverage for the event. If you include the amount earned through radio, television, and other social media platforms, then the cost spent is merely a small amount.
Competitors Participate From Different Countries
Many foreign countries visited Portugal to participate in the surfing events conducted this year. The majority of these foreign participants belonged to Brazil in both surfing events. The foreign participants are listed below in order of their presence in these two surfing events:
- Brazil
- Germany
- Spain
- France
- England
- Netherlands
- Australia
- Italy
- Canada
Brazilians were present in both the surfing events. The majority of the Germans and Spanish took part in Peniche while many French and some Spanish took part in Nazaré. There was also some participation from countries like England, Netherlands, Australia, Italy, and Canada.
