Tourism Has Become Record High As 10.5 Million Tourists Stayed Overnight In August

Portugal has hit a record high tourist for the month of August. Around 3.8 million tourists have stayed overnight which is a 5.9% increase overall. The Portugal Tourism sector has recorded an all-time high figure of 10.5 million.

Record Number Of Tourists In August

The National Institute of Statistics (INE) has released this data on 30 September. The data shows that the tourists in the country are much more than they were in the previous years. This data marks an increase of 3.8% as compared to last year. Many tourists are still entering the country to visit the beautiful places in Karachi. The president of the Algarve Tourism Board (RTA) and the Algarve Tourism Association (ATA), André Gomes has stated:

The Algarve’s performance in August reflects the preference of domestic tourists, who remain our primary clientele. These results demonstrate the destination’s strength and appeal, reinforcing the importance of continuing to invest in a diverse range of offerings that meet the expectations of our visitors.

These numbers have been increasing for some years. The number of tourists for this year has been recorded as the highest. This number also includes the 9.9 million overnight stays in Portugal which was recorded in the year 2022. The comparison of stats is as follows:

  • 9.9 million overnight stays in 2022
  • 10.1 million overnight stays in 2023
  • 10.5 million overnight stays in 2024

André Gomes was impressed by the efforts put in by the tourism industry for this success. He believes that the numbers speak for themselves. Gomes further said:

The numbers are encouraging, especially in the domestic market, which played a crucial role in this success.

Many tourists have checked into tourist resorts and hotels in Portugal. It is estimated that around 3.8 million people went to book a hotel in the month of August. This is a 5.9% rise from the year of 2023. This number represents both the local and the foreign tourists who travel to various beautiful places within the country. The overnight stays by the citizens of the country have increased by 4.6% which is 3.6 million more people. The international tourists are around 6.9 million people who have booked overnight stays. This represents an increase of 3.4% as compared to last year.  

Majority Tourists From United Kingdom And Spain

Many people from the United Kingdom travel to Portugal for sightseeing and visiting scenic views. Their number contributes to around 17.1% of the total overnight stays. This number has increased by 1.3% as compared to the last year. Spain comes in second place which contributes 16.3% of the total number. It has increased by 4.6% since the last year.

An increase in the number of visitors was observed from the United States and Canada as well. The interest of the North American people is still seen as influential. The stats of people from the United States have increased to 8.4% people and similarly 8.2% from Canada. It is reported that every region of Portugal has seen an increase in the number of tourists. Only one region has seen a decrease in the stats of tourists. This region is Madeira which has observed a minor decrease of 0.3%.

Setúbal Peninsula has observed the greatest increase in the tourism industry. Their numbers have gone way up by around 8.1% as compared to the last year. The second place that observed the most tourists is the Azores. This region has observed an increase in tourists by 7.5% more than the previous year. Some regions have observed a more modest growth rate than the previous year. One such example is Algarve. It is considered the main tourist attraction of Portugal. There is no doubt that in the future many more people will visit the Algarve due to its unmatched beauty.
